Anthropic launches Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, zero-data-retention with misuse detection

On September 1 Anthropic's official Announcements section published Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, a marked departure from the 30-day traffic retention policy introduced alongside Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 in June. The system combines zero-data-retention privacy with state-of-the-art misuse detection: data custody stays with the customer, keys and human review stay with the customer, and Anthropic retains only the detection capability. Anthropic's head of Americas Kate Jensen told CNBC that the company spent hundreds of hours working with customers to develop the alternative.

The core architecture places monitoring data in customer-controlled cloud storage rather than Anthropic infrastructure, allowing customers to use Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage or Google Cloud Storage under their own encryption keys and access policies. Automated safety monitoring still scans for potential misuse, but no human review by Anthropic employees is required. This addresses a long-standing tension in which enterprises need zero-retention guarantees while security teams still require misuse detection. Anthropic emphasized that the company has never trained on enterprise data without explicit permission and never will.

The system was co-developed with more than 100 enterprise customers across financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, telecom, law, retail and the public sector. Anthropic partnered with the Analysis and Resilience Center for Systemic Risk, whose members include the CISOs of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo. EFS will roll out to customers in phases starting later in fall 2026. Anthropic said it will not charge for EFS, but customers using their own cloud storage will pay provider costs for storage, reads, writes and data transfers. During the transition, eligible customers will receive zero-data-retention on Fable 5 and Fable 5.1.

EFS is supported on Claude Code, Claude Enterprise, the Claude Platform, Amazon Bedrock, Claude Platform on AWS, Google's Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry. Anthropic emphasized that it has never trained on enterprise data without explicit permission, characterizing the prior retention policy as a safety-driven measure rather than a training intent. The move follows OpenAI's introduction of a similar safety monitoring system that does not require holding customer data, marking what industry observers see as a significant turning point in how AI safety monitoring is operationalized for enterprise use.
