GitHub Copilot to retire Gemini 3.5/3.6 Flash, Kimi K2.7 Code and Claude Opus 4.7 on Oct 2
On Sep 3 GitHub changelog announced Copilot will retire Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini 3.6 Flash, Kimi K2.7 Code and Claude Opus 4.7 on Oct 2, with Gemini 3.8 Flash, Kimi K3 and Claude Opus 5 as suggested replacements.
On September 3 GitHub's official changelog published Upcoming deprecation of selected GitHub Copilot models, announcing that on October 2, 2026 four models will be retired from all Copilot experiences: Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini 3.6 Flash, Kimi K2.7 Code and Claude Opus 4.7. Suggested replacements are Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Kimi K3 and Claude Opus 5.
The notice also reminded Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Business administrators to enable the replacement models in their policies so that users see them in the model picker. GitHub framed the change as aligning the Copilot matrix with the current production-grade lineup. If administrators do not update their configurations before October 2, code completion and chat features could be disrupted.
The deprecation aligns with the recent wave of flagship releases from major AI labs. Google shipped Gemini 3.8 Flash and the Cyber defense variant on September 2, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on July 24, and Moonshot launched Kimi K3 in July. Copilot's model pool is consolidating around the latest generation.
