OpenAI pauses new subscriptions for $200 ChatGPT Pro 20X tier amid Astra demand
OpenAI announced on September 10 it would pause new subscriptions for the $200/month ChatGPT Pro 20X tier, citing Astra demand exceeding expectations. Existing subscribers are unaffected.
OpenAI Chief Product Officer Tibo announced on X that the company is pausing new subscriptions for the $200/month ChatGPT Pro 20X tier to ensure existing subscribers have a smooth experience accessing GPT-6 Astra. Existing subscribers are not affected.
Tibo publicly acknowledged underestimating the scale of Astra demand. ChatGPT Pro 20X was introduced on April 9 when ChatGPT Pro split into two tiers, offering roughly 20 times the Plus usage quota, a 1M token context window, and 250 monthly Deep Research runs.
The subscription pause follows several Astra milestones earlier this month. OpenAI disclosed that Astra helped mathematicians resolve the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, and subsequently reported substantive progress on the Hodge conjecture.
